Making Books School: Boxes, Slipcases & Portfolios

An improver-level bookbinding course covering four box-making structures through guided studio workshops.
About this course
Participants develop box-making skills by constructing four structures: a ribboned slipcase, a single-tray box with a hand-hole and magnetic closure, a matchbox-style box, and a lidded shoebox-style box with compartments. The programme focuses on the construction methods and techniques used for these forms, with each project made by hand. Instruction is delivered through consecutive studio workshops, combining demonstrations and guided making as learners progress through the structures.
What you'll learn
- Construct a slipcase with a ribbon for a chosen book
- Make a single-tray box with a hand-hole and magnetic closure
- Build matchbox-style and shoebox-style lidded structures
- Apply box-making techniques to structures with trays, compartments, closures and ribbons
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for learners developing beyond fundamental bookbinding techniques. Some bookbinding experience is recommended, while the Improver level suggests a focus on extending existing skills rather than starting from the beginning.
