Masterclass: fiction (a one-term intensive workshop)

About this course

The course examines advanced fictional craft through tutor-led discussion and constructive workshopping of short stories and novel excerpts. Participants develop their own projects for possible publication while considering craft issues arising from the material under review. Teaching combines peer evaluation with tutor feedback. Writers read workshop submissions closely outside class, prepare written responses and discuss their comments with the group. The course also addresses revision and the use of critical and editorial skills in developing fiction.

This course is intended for advanced or professional fiction writers working on short- or long-form projects, particularly those with advanced workshop experience and/or a history of publication. Regular attendance, full participation and fluent English are expected.

• Participants read peers’ work outside class and provide constructive written feedback
• Writers submit details of their background and workshop experience, along with a prose sample of up to 500 words
