Masterclass: poetry (a one-term intensive workshop)

About this course

The course examines ways to work with classic and emerging poetic forms, poetic schools, conceit, rhyme and rhythm. Participants develop their poems through writing exercises, tutor-led discussions, workshop readings and feedback from the tutor and other learners. Sessions also address theory, structure and revision, with opportunities to redraft work for performance and publication. Learners will share their own poems for discussion and complete writing and redrafting exercises both during and between classes.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for experienced poetry writers working at an advanced workshop level. Applicants are expected to have written several poems to a publishable standard. Full attendance and active participation are expected, alongside reading and writing between sessions.

• Previous experience in an advanced workshop setting is expected.
• Applicants are asked to provide details of their writing background and workshop experience.
• The course involves sharing poems and giving and receiving constructive feedback.
• Work is set for completion outside class to agreed deadlines.

Before you go

• Bring a notebook and pen or pencil.
• Copies of poems may need to be brought when requested.
• Reading and writing exercises are set for completion at home.
