About this course

The course surveys Sam Peckinpah’s filmmaking through selected film extracts, tutor presentations, textual analysis and group discussion. It considers how he shaped narrative and direction, including his use of slow motion to create a stylised naturalistic treatment of violence. It also examines Peckinpah’s collaboration with a recurring group of actors and the melancholic nostalgia surrounding his portrayals of honourable and corrupt heroes. The course places these approaches within an overview of his career and contribution to American cinema.
