About this course

The course surveys Vittorio De Sica’s work as a director and actor, from post-war neo-realism in films such as Shoeshine, The Bicycle Thieves and Umberto D to the social comedies of the 1960s. It considers how storytelling, non-professional actors, realistic settings and sound represented social problems in Italy, alongside De Sica’s collaborations with writer Cesare Zavattini and actor Sophia Loren. Tutor presentations, film extracts, textual analysis and general discussion provide the teaching format, with attention also given to De Sica’s career as an actor.
