About this course

The course introduces learners to working with new and scrap metals for sculptural or applied projects. Demonstrations and step-by-step instruction cover welding, gas cutting, metal forming, shaping, grinding and safe workshop practice. Learners may develop personal or tutor-led projects, with individual tuition, questions and answers, group discussion and feedback supporting the work. After developing basic skills, participants can work more independently with one-to-one assistance. The course also considers how metal processes relate to sculpture and design, alongside research, idea development and the exchange of approaches within the group.

What you'll learn

  • Practise gas and electric welding processes, including gas cutting.
  • Use metal forming, shaping and grinding techniques to construct metal objects.
  • Apply appropriate health and safety procedures when working in the studio.
  • Develop research ideas and relate metalworking processes to sculpture and design.
  • Work towards producing constructed metal objects to a satisfactory standard.
