About this course

Participants develop metalworking skills through demonstrations, step-by-step instruction, observation and individual tuition. The course covers gas and electric welding, gas cutting, forming, shaping and grinding, with projects using new or scrap metal for sculptural or applied purposes. Learners work on individual or tutor-led projects, setting goals with the tutor and discussing work with the group. After developing the basic techniques, participants can pursue their own projects with one-to-one assistance. The course also considers how metal processes relate to sculpture, design and wider artistic practice.

What you'll learn

  • Apply gas and electric welding techniques, including gas cutting.
  • Form, shape and grind metal for constructed sculptural objects.
  • Practise safe workshop procedures in relation to themselves and others.
  • Develop and refine individual project ideas through research and discussion.
  • Relate metalworking processes to sculpture and design.
