Metal sculpture: beginners to intermediate

About this course

The course introduces metal fabrication for sculptural and design work. Learners examine examples by artists and designers, then receive demonstrations of processes including cutting, bending, forming, drilling, bolting, riveting, welding and soldering. Practical work involves developing a design, constructing a maquette as a pattern, and producing a small-scale metal object or sculpture. Teaching combines demonstrations, technical notes, instruction and individual or group work. Sessions also cover safe equipment use, display methods, and discussion-based review of the work and processes.

• A pacemaker may affect participation while the plasma cutter is in use and should be discussed with the Sculpture Department before enrolment.

Before you go

• General tools and equipment are provided.
• Most materials for sampling and experimentation are included. Materials for a larger piece must be purchased or supplied by the learner.
• Found ferrous metal objects may be incorporated into the work.
• A sketchbook and drawing materials are recommended.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes must be worn. Old clothing or overalls are strongly recommended.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn when required.
