About this course

Participants study four to six historical scripts, including Roman Capitals, through tutor demonstrations, guided drills, text analysis and individual feedback. The course examines proportion, rhythm, spacing, weight, height, compression, angles and serif details, with attention to how small changes affect letterforms. Alongside historical study, learners develop a personalised modern alphabet and apply their lettering to a creative project. Possible formats include cards, panels, booklets, stationery, bookplates and manuscript-inspired designs, depending on individual skill level.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse and recreate distinctive features of historical scripts
  • Apply pointed pen and broad nib techniques to produce regular, fluent letterforms
  • Refine lettering through control of weight, height, slope, compression, spacing and serif details
  • Design and develop a personalised alphabet
  • Complete a calligraphy project using an appropriate format and lettering approach
