Modern art: 1950s-1970s, material and form

About this course

The course examines the development of Western art from late modernism to postmodernism, considering how artists responded to post-war conditions and wider cultural change. It explores movements including Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, Arte Povera, Land Art, Feminist Art and Identity Politics. Lectures, slide presentations and group discussions are supported by case studies of artists including Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Eva Hesse, Joseph Beuys and Carolee Schneemann. Discussion centres on the relationship between ideas, materials and form, as well as art’s engagement with society, history, trauma, the body and the natural world.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to all levels and no prior knowledge of the subject is required. It involves listening to lectures, examining visual material and taking part in group discussions. Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information.
