Modern British History – Part 5 (1901-2000)

About this course

This course surveys Britain’s twentieth century through themes including the First and Second World Wars, economic change, welfare reform, decolonisation, the Cold War and changing political ideas. It also considers developments from the Liberal reforms and the post-war consensus to Thatcherism, the 1990s and the rise of New Labour. Teaching combines tutor presentations with analysis of historical sources and contrasting historians’ interpretations. Class discussions provide opportunities to consider and share different views. Wider reading and documentary viewing are recommended to extend study beyond class.

The course is intended for adults aged 19 or over with a reasonable level of English who want to study modern British history. No previous knowledge of history is needed. Learners will encounter tutor presentations, source analysis and group discussion, with recommended reading and documentaries for further study.
