Modern calligraphy

About this course

The course introduces modern calligraphy through flowing, cursive letterforms made with a flexible pointed nib, alongside an examination of copperplate characteristics. Learners analyse historical scripts, discuss examples from different periods, and practise controlling stroke weight, spacing, speed, height, compression and angles. Group and individual demonstrations are combined with visual references, worksheets, discussion and supported practice. Depending on their skill level, participants develop a project such as a handmade card, poetry panel, stationery design, personal alphabet, concertina book or illuminated text page.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and improvers, with exercises adaptable to different skill levels. Learning combines group and individual demonstrations with mainly individual practice. Group discussions are offered but voluntary, and learners should be able to follow written and spoken English instructions, read handouts and understand health and safety information.

Before you go

• Beginners receive some basic materials in the first lesson, including cartridge paper, pens, erasers and some inks.
• From the second session onwards, learners are expected to bring their own materials. The listed items include a notebook or pad, A3 layout paper, smooth hot-pressed paper, an eraser, a 50cm gridded ruler, a 0.3 automatic pencil, a Speedball 2968 Oblique Pen Set and a Japanese calligraphy ink stick and ink stone.
• The 0.3 automatic pencil is not essential. Learners who are unsure about purchasing tools can wait for the first lesson, when the tutor will demonstrate them and suggest sources.
• No preparation is required beforehand; practice between sessions is optional.
