About this course
The course traces developments from Neo-Classicism to Post-Impressionism through close study of paintings by artists including Goya, Delacroix, Géricault, Constable, Monet, Seurat and Munch. It considers movements such as Realism, the Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionism, focusing on stylistic innovation and artists’ aims. Slide presentations and lectures are combined with group discussion to examine how revolution, colonial expansion, industrialisation and other cultural factors influenced nineteenth-century art. Specific works discussed include Liberty Leading the People, The Raft of the Medusa, The Hay Wain and The Scream.
