About this course

The course examines philosophical ideas underlying current political debates. It begins with classical liberalism before considering radical, conservative and other perspectives on the state, citizenship, freedom, equality, rights and the relationship between individuals and society. Tutor presentations are combined with seminar discussion of topics including Marxist critiques of liberalism, libertarianism, neoliberalism, identity, class, justice and the use of power. Participants will also read and comment on extracts from philosophical texts, with suggested weekly reading available for further study.

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes learners new to philosophy and assumes no previous knowledge, while being particularly suitable for those who have taken an introductory political philosophy course.
