About this course

Rehearsals focus on selected pieces chosen by the conductor, covering big-band arrangements from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s alongside contemporary jazz charts. Players work on interpreting arrangements, reading music at sight and shaping phrases within the jazz idiom. Some sessions include sectional work, while regular tutor feedback addresses playing and interpretation. The repertoire also provides opportunities to examine musical structures and broaden knowledge of big-band writing.

  • Apply jazz phrasing across different styles and techniques
  • Develop ensemble and sectional playing skills
