About this course
Rehearsals centre on ensemble singing across a varied programme of mostly classical chamber-choir works, with attention to how individual vocal lines combine within polyphonic music. Sessions begin with vocal and physical warm-ups, followed by guidance on text clarity, intonation and performance instructions. Participants sing from scores and follow a conductor, while developing their understanding by listening to other voice parts. Advice on healthy vocal technique may occasionally be provided by a specialist vocal coach. The choir often gives a public performance at the end of each term.
What you'll learn
- Interpret and perform chamber-choir repertoire from musical scores
- Follow a conductor and develop musicianship when singing in an ensemble
- Sustain an individual vocal line within polyphonic music
- Apply approaches to text clarity, intonation and performance instructions
- Use healthy, efficient vocal technique appropriate to the voice type and experience
Is this course right for you?
The choir is non-auditioned but intended for singers who can read musical notation and sing from a score, with a healthy singing voice. Regular rehearsal attendance, some preparation between sessions and comfort with public performance are expected. Sight-reading is desirable but not essential.
- Requires musical preparation between rehearsals
- Includes collaborative ensemble singing rather than individual tuition
- Members are expected to be comfortable performing in public
Before you go
- Bring music scores and a pencil for marking the conductor’s instructions.
- Members are expected to hire or purchase their own copies of the music. Copies of non-copyrighted music can be supplied, and music for the first two sessions is provided wherever possible.
