About this course
Sessions combine physical and vocal warm-ups with learning folk melodies by ear rather than from written music. The group works on three or four songs in contrasting styles, with harmonies usually arranged by the tutor and taught through repetition. Participants may sing as soloists, in duets or as part of a small choir, and can explore spontaneous harmonisation where appropriate. The course also considers folk-song context, repertoire and expression. Short vocal pieces may be memorised as part of the warm-up, and suitable songs may be selected for performance at end-of-term events when these take place.
What you'll learn
- Memorise short vocal pieces used in folk-singing warm-ups
- Learn melodies and other material by ear
- Maintain an assigned vocal part within a song arrangement
- Experiment with spontaneous harmonisation in the folk style
- Recognise contrasting styles and examples within the folk repertoire
