About this course

Participants rehearse pieces selected by the conductor and develop their role within a large jazz ensemble. The course covers a range of jazz styles, with attention to stylistic integrity, phrasing in the jazz idiom and stronger improvisational playing. Rehearsal work also develops sight-reading through more complex jazz arrangements. Learners receive regular feedback while working on ensemble playing and extending their dynamic range.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for instrumentalists who meet the stated ABRSM Grade 5-6 entry level and are ready to rehearse and perform as part of a large jazz ensemble. The Intermediate label suggests study beyond foundational playing, with particular attention to ensemble skills, sight-reading and improvisation.

• Participation involves playing within a section of a large jazz ensemble.

Before you go

• Bring a working instrument to each class.
• Brass players should bring a selection of mutes.
• The course may involve high volume levels; bringing ear plugs to every lesson is strongly encouraged.
