Mosaic Beginners

About this course

Participants create a 22cm square or circular mosaic while learning how to develop a design through andamento, spacing and borders. The course covers transferring a design to its working surface, selecting colours and materials, cutting ceramic and vitreous glass tiles with tile nippers, and laying them with PVA. Teaching combines practical classroom work with individual guidance and feedback. Participants also explore grouting, cleaning and polishing, either during the course or with instructions for completing the finish at home. A Personal Learning Plan is used to identify learning goals and track progress.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, including learners with no previous mosaic experience. No drawing skills are needed, and design ideas will be available. Learners with intermediate experience may also attend for advice, company and access to materials. Participation involves practical studio work and developing an individual mosaic.

Before you go

• Materials can be purchased from the college, or learners may bring their own.
• There is no on-site storage for personal materials unless they are purchased from the college.
• Learners should allow 15 minutes at the end of each class for tidying up.
• Food and drink are not permitted in the studio; a nearby hub area is available for refreshments.
