Mosaics Workshop

About this course

The workshop explores mosaics in two- and three-dimensional forms, from decorative and fine-art approaches to pieces for domestic or outdoor settings. Materials may include glass, ceramic tile, china, mirror and marble, with attention to texture, surface quality and style. Learners develop an individual project through design, cutting and adhering materials, then fixing the mosaic to a surface or casting it into concrete. Teaching combines demonstrations, group discussion and individual support. The direct, indirect and double-indirect techniques are covered, with opportunities to investigate more advanced approaches such as relief work and three-dimensional surfaces.

The course is designed for beginners, intermediate learners and more advanced students, with individual goals and projects negotiated with the tutor. Its practical workshop format includes demonstrations, group discussion and individual tuition. Returning students are also welcome.

Before you go

• Ideas or sketches may be brought to the first session, but this is not obligatory.
• Tools and some materials are supplied. Learners may bring their own materials if they want a wider choice, but it is advisable to attend the first session before buying anything extra.
• Large projects may require more than one term to complete.
• The class has partial disabled access via a stair lift. Learners with mobility support needs should contact the relevant college support or administration team before enrolling.
