About this course

Participants develop a mosaic project from initial design through cutting and adhering materials, then fixing the work to a surface or casting it into concrete. Projects may be two- or three-dimensional and can use glass, ceramic tiles, china, mirror and marble, with attention to texture, surface quality and style. Teaching combines practical workshops, group demonstrations, discussion and individual tuition. Learners work with one of three approaches: direct, indirect or double indirect. The course also considers mosaic styles and supports the development of personal projects, including more challenging relief or three-dimensional work for advanced learners.

What you'll learn

  • Develop ideas for future mosaic projects
  • Complete a mosaic independently
  • Identify and describe a range of mosaic styles using examples
  • Explain the principles of direct, indirect and double indirect techniques
  • Develop a personal project using a chosen technique, including relief or three-dimensional approaches

Is this course right for you?

The workshop is suitable for beginners, intermediate learners and advanced students. Beginners can explore the subject through demonstrations and supported project work, while more experienced participants can pursue individual goals and more challenging techniques. Returning students are welcome.

  • Individual projects are negotiated with the tutor
  • More advanced learners can develop personal work in a chosen technique
  • Returning students are explicitly welcome
