Music theory: grade 1

About this course

The course introduces the notation and musical language covered by the ABRSM Grade 1 syllabus. Topics include note and rest values, ties and dotted notes, simple time signatures, barlines, treble and bass clefs, accidentals, and the construction of the C, G, D and F major keys. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with worksheets, revision recordings, group performance and individual tasks. Class activities include reading, writing, hearing, clapping and playing or singing simple rhythms, alongside written homework and practice questions based on a Grade 1 theory paper.

What you'll learn

• Read and write rhythms using common note and rest values in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 time
• Identify and notate pitches on treble and bass staves
• Recognise and write music in the major keys of C, G, D and F
• Apply key signatures, scale degrees, intervals and tonic triads in these keys
• Interpret commonly used musical terms and symbols
• Answer questions in a sample ABRSM Grade 1 theory paper

Is this course right for you?

Although the course is at beginner level for music theory, it is not intended for absolute beginners to music. Learners are expected to have started learning an instrument or voice from notation and to recognise some basic musical symbols. Participation includes group and individual practical exercises, class discussion, written work and weekly homework in English.

Before you go

• Learners need manuscript paper, a pencil, an eraser, a notebook and a pen.
