About this course
The course examines how national identity is formed and expressed across different societies. Topics include nationality, sovereignty, language, religion and political ideologies, with examples from Western, non-Western and anticolonial contexts. Teaching combines illustrated lectures with group discussion and analysis of relevant texts and media. Sessions also consider multicultural nationalism, regional patriotism, belonging, social cohesion and the role of the state in shaping national culture.
