Oil Painting – Beginners

About this course

Participants develop foundational oil-painting skills through exercises focused on colour mixing, colour theory, tonal values and composition. The course also considers how different mediums and tools affect the painting process, alongside ways to establish a suitable working space and identify an individual approach. Teaching combines observation of real objects, study of artists, group discussions, project work and tutor feedback. Learners create a Personal Learning Plan to identify goals and monitor their development, with group critiques at the end of each session and individual verbal feedback during activities.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and learners who are new to oil painting. Some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is recommended, but the course focuses on establishing essential skills. Participation includes individual project work, group discussions and sharing work in supportive group critiques. Learners must be aged 19 or over.
