Oil Painting (Intermediate Level)

ByPutney School of Art and Design

Painting

Intermediate

An intermediate oil painting course combining tutor demonstrations, group discussion and individual tutorials with term-long, idea-led projects.

About this course

The course uses term-long projects to connect technical investigation with the development of individual ideas and working methods. Participants explore colour, paint handling, media, surfaces, experimental materials, and ways of beginning and building a painting. Teaching combines demonstrations, group discussion and individual tutorials. Projects may draw on direct observation, gallery visits, photography and film, while discussion of historical and contemporary painters provides points of reference for considering different processes and approaches. The course introduces new techniques while placing increasing emphasis on developing an individual visual language and working independently.

What you'll learn

  • Experiment with colour, paint handling, media, surfaces and painting processes
  • Develop paintings from sources including observation, photography, film and gallery visits
  • Analyse how historical and contemporary painters approach their work
  • Develop a more individual visual language and working process

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners working beyond the fundamentals of oil painting. Some initial experience and a working knowledge of basic colour mixing and paint handling are ideally expected, while individual tutorials can address areas of uncertainty. Projects allow for differing levels of experience and encourage experimentation.

  • Learners develop projects over an extended period
  • Individual tutorials form part of the teaching
  • A willingness to take risks and experiment is encouraged

Before you go

  • Participants need paints and brushes listed by the provider, Zest-it rather than white spirit or turpentine, linseed oil, painting surfaces specified for the project, rags or kitchen roll, a palette and a sketchbook.
  • A materials list and the term's project are sent after enrolment.
  • Basic materials can be bought from the school's shop.
