About this course

Participants spend most sessions drawing and painting through tutor-set project briefs inspired by places, spaces, journeys and memories. The course explores colour mixing, material handling, visual relationships and optical effects, alongside the historical development of abstract painting. Teaching combines short talks, demonstrations, handouts, individual tuition and group reviews. Online learners receive project materials by email and join discussions and demonstrations through Teams or Zoom. Returning learners can develop personal projects agreed with the tutor.

What you'll learn

  • Experiment with different painting materials, methods and techniques
  • Explore colour mixing, visual relationships and optical effects in abstract work
  • Develop projects independently from initial ideas
  • Recognise key aspects of the historical development of abstract painting
