About this course

The course introduces watercolour through traditional and experimental approaches to still-life, figurative and landscape subjects. Participants work from observation, imagination or photographic references, exploring wet-on-wet, dry brush, glazing, layering, colour mixing, transparency, composition and mark-making. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, group discussions, work shows, group critiques and one-to-one or small-group guidance. Beginners follow a structured programme, while learners with existing experience can develop an individual project and explore more challenging aspects of planned work.

What you'll learn

• Apply wet-on-wet, dry-brush, glazing and layering techniques
• Translate observed subjects into expressive watercolour paintings
• Mix colours and use transparency and limited palettes to suggest depth, light and mood
• Control brushes, paper and water when handling watercolour materials
• Experiment with composition and mark-making through traditional and expressive approaches
• Discuss the work of contemporary watercolour painters

The course is intended for learners of all abilities, including complete beginners. Beginners follow structured activities, while those with some experience can identify an individual project and may explore more challenging approaches. Participation includes group discussion, sharing work and group critiques.

• Complete beginners are welcome; some drawing experience is helpful but not required

Before you go

• Some basic materials are provided. Additional paper and other materials can be purchased at low cost, or learners may bring their own.
• Resources and information are shared through Microsoft Teams and MyDay, and a Morley College email address is needed for certain college activities.
