About this course

The course develops foundational painting skills through work from observation, with attention to tone, colour, composition, paint handling and technique. Acrylic is the main medium, although some tutors may introduce oils.

What you'll learn

  • Describe basic tonal structure using paint
  • Explore compositional arrangements in painting
  • Mix colours using basic colour theory
  • Apply techniques including impasto, scumble and glaze
  • Recognise the work of different artists and practitioners

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for beginners developing fundamental painting skills. Some drawing experience may be helpful but is not essential. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, handouts, practical studio work, individual and group tutoring, reflection, and group discussion.

  • Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions
  • Learners should be able to follow demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information
  • Participation in group discussion is part of the course

  • Basic materials and resources required for the course are provided
  • Aprons are provided; learners are asked to wear old clothes
