About this course

The course develops painting skills through exercises and projects focused on tone, composition, colour, surface quality and texture. Participants mainly work in oils, with acrylics introduced where a project calls for them, and examine how different techniques suit particular applications. Teaching combines studio practice with demonstrations, presentations, handouts, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. Learners are encouraged to review their work and progress, and to identify areas for further development.

What you'll learn

  • Apply tone, composition and colour as formal elements within a painting.
  • Explore how surface quality and texture affect an image.
  • Use a wider range of painting techniques and processes.
  • Reflect on the development and progress of their own work.
  • Identify areas of interest for further development.
