Painting 3

About this course

The course uses set projects to investigate composition, scale, surface dynamics and ways of handling paint, from short gestural studies to layered work. Participants will examine how chance, accident, colour and technique can shape a painting as it develops, while considering selected examples from contemporary practice. Teaching combines studio work with demonstrations, handouts, one-to-one tutoring and group discussion. Learners will review their own paintings and respond to critical feedback, using these discussions to consider how paintings can be planned and executed.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with previous painting experience, such as those who have completed Painting 1 and Painting 2 or gained equivalent experience. The intermediate label suggests work beyond fundamental techniques. Participants should be able to follow written and spoken instructions, demonstrations and health and safety guidance, and take part in group discussion.

• Previous Painting 1 and Painting 2 study, or equivalent experience, is recommended.
• Participation includes group discussion and responding to feedback on work produced in class.
