Painting and drawing dialogues: properties of the medium

About this course

The course examines the distinct qualities of painting and drawing materials and how their marks, processes and contrasts can shape an observed image. Participants work from direct and indirect observation, exploring abstract marks, gesture, composition and the role of light in visual perception. Teaching combines structured practical projects, presentations on selected artists, group discussion, evaluations and one-to-one guidance. Workshops develop an ongoing exchange between the two disciplines while encouraging participants to make connections across sessions and investigate more individual subject matter.

This intermediate course is intended for learners with some painting or drawing experience, including those exploring the relationship between the two disciplines.
