About this course

The course examines how film stills, photographs and other found images can be taken out of context and reworked as secondary source material. Participants use projected images, fragments and collage to investigate visual structure, narrative content and the relationship between painting and drawing. Teaching combines structured practical projects with group workshops, discussions, evaluations, presentations on selected artists and one-to-one guidance. Work developed through the workshops is gradually connected with more individual areas of enquiry.

What you'll learn

  • Develop narrative content in painting and drawing from secondary visual sources.
  • Investigate how fragmenting, reconstructing and recontextualising images affects their visual and interpretive potential.
  • Combine painting and drawing with fragment and collage processes.
  • Apply secondary sources to decision-making and problem-solving within a developing artwork.
  • Discuss and evaluate the progress of individual work.
