Painting and Drawing Projects

About this course

The course begins with structured painting and drawing exercises exploring different approaches, materials and subjects, including abstraction, composition, colour, interiors, cityscapes and work from photographs. Participants record experiments, research and developing ideas in a sketchbook, using examples of contemporary and historical artists as reference. Later work centres on individual projects, supported by group discussion, pair work, individual tutoring and tutorials. Subject matter and abstraction can be chosen by each participant. Work may take place in the studio or outdoors, with plein air painting and image collection included when weather permits.

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for adults aged 19 or over who already have some knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques. Participants develop individual work while taking part in pair activities, group discussions and feedback. The course includes self-directed reflection and may involve painting outdoors when weather permits.

• Some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is required
• Participants may discuss their plans in pairs or present work to the group if they wish
• The course is open to new and returning students, with returning learners able to extend techniques through further experimentation
• Participants must be aged 19 or over on 31 August before the course starts

Before you go

• Bring basic drawing and painting materials and an A4-size or larger sketchbook to every session.
• An A1 portfolio case is needed for carrying work.
• Further materials may be needed as individual projects develop; paper is available to buy in class.
• Prepare for changing weather conditions when outdoor work is scheduled.
