Painting and Drawing

About this course

The course develops painting and drawing through structured exercises based on still life, portraiture, landscape and cityscape subjects. Learners work on observation, accurate drawing, composition, perspective, colour theory and painting techniques, with themes varying across the year. Teaching combines practical activities, tutor guidance, individual verbal feedback and group critiques. Learners can study approaches used by historical and contemporary artists, explore personal interpretations and develop a preferred style through painting and drawing projects.

What you'll learn

• Apply observational methods to drawings of objects, figures, landscapes and architectural settings.
• Construct compositions using perspective, proportion and other planning techniques.
• Use colour theory and palette management in painting projects.
• Experiment with charcoal, chalk pastels, oils or acrylics as appropriate to the project.
• Analyse selected historical and contemporary artists’ techniques, compositions or colour choices.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques, corresponding to its Improver level. Returning, intermediate and advanced learners can continue developing existing skills and explore more individual interpretations. Participation includes practical work, group critiques and individual feedback. Learners must be aged 19 or over on 31 August before the course starts.
