About this course
The course introduces observational painting through work based on objects, images and portraiture. Participants explore watercolour, acrylics and oil paint, considering the different qualities of each medium and how brushes create varied marks. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations and discussion of materials and techniques with set projects. The class also considers artists’ work, with participants developing paintings in each medium separately and receiving guidance during the process.

The course is intended for beginners as well as learners with some previous experience who want a refresher. Participation combines tutor-led demonstrations, set projects and painting with support from the wider group.

Before you go
- The classroom is accessible only by stairs and has no lift access.
- Pigments and solvents are used, so health and safety guidance applies.
- Participants should bring red, yellow and blue acrylic paint, plus black and white; suitable brushes; a water jar; kitchen towel; a rubber; a sharpener; a B pencil; and A3 acrylic or oil paper or canvas boards.
