About this course

The course examines how plants and flowers have been painted, combining observation with experimentation across gouache, watercolour, soft pastels and acrylic paint. Learners will simplify organic forms, study the effects of light and explore colour-media application at different scales and on coloured or textured grounds. Teaching combines demonstrations, group and one-to-one tuition, discussion and analysis of other artists’ approaches. Sketchbook work and basic research methods are also introduced to help develop individual responses to plant and flower subjects.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse and simplify complex organic forms.
  • Mix and match observed colours using a range of media.
  • Use varied mark-making methods to communicate characteristics of natural forms.
  • Compose paintings at different scales and on coloured or textured grounds.
  • Develop personal interpretations of plants and flowers informed by other artists.
