Palettes of the Past, Present and Future

About this course

The course examines how artists’ palettes, cultural influences and available materials have shaped colour in art history. Participants study selected artists and movements, then make paintings informed by their palettes and approaches. Practical work covers limited-palette mixing, colour theory, hue, saturation and tonal value, alongside brush techniques such as layering, wet-on-wet painting and blending. Sessions include composition planning, observational exercises, individual verbal feedback and informal group critiques. Learners also work with the tutor to develop a Personal Learning Plan for setting goals and monitoring progress.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers developing beyond fundamental painting techniques, with some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques required. Participation combines individual painting projects with discussion, tutor feedback and informal group critiques. Learners must be aged 19 or over on 31 August before the course starts.
