Papermaking for Textiles

About this course

Participants explore how pulp made from cotton linters and recycled paper can be developed into decorative and textured papers for textile applications. The course introduces paper thread and experiments with stitching, weaving, crochet, knitting, machine and hand-stitching, shibori tie dye, batik, printing and collage. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, practical exercises and technical handouts. Learners examine Japanese paper textile techniques, share work through discussion and group critique, and receive feedback through one-to-one and group guidance. Complete beginners can develop reference samples, while returning students may be given additional exercises alongside set work.

Before you go

• Bring two packs of J cloths, a jam jar, a plastic box or strong plastic bag for damp paper sheets, and a notebook and pen.
• Learners may bring textiles they are currently working on.
• The course takes place in a second-floor studio with lift access.
• Learners with mobility support needs should contact the college's Additional Learning Support or Art and Design administration before enrolling.
