About this course

Participants explore pulp preparation and handmade paper production using cotton linters and recycled paper. Tutor demonstrations are followed by practical work with professional equipment, supported by technical handouts, individual guidance and group feedback. The course covers embossed, laminated, decorative and textured papers, with opportunities to experiment using coloured pulp and customised moulds. Discussion, show and tell, group critique and one-to-one support form part of the teaching approach.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for beginners, including complete beginners, and for returning students who may be given additional exercises alongside the set work. Participation includes practical making, tutor demonstrations, discussion, show and tell, group critique and individual guidance.

Before you go

  • Participants should bring two packs of J cloths, a jam jar, a plastic box or strong plastic bag for damp paper sheets, newspapers, and a notebook and pen.
  • Optional materials for adding to paper include thread, wool, lace, petals and leaves.
  • The studio is on the second floor and has lift access. Learners with mobility support needs should contact Additional Learning Support or Art and Design administration before enrolling.
