Papermaking Taster

About this course

The course introduces pulp preparation and sheet formation using cotton linters and recycled paper. Tutor demonstrations are followed by practical work with a mould and deckle, supported by technical handouts and feedback. Participants will produce embossed, laminated, decorative and textured papers, and explore coloured pulp and customised moulds. Learning also includes discussion, show and tell, group critique, and tutor guidance delivered both one-to-one and in groups.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for beginners, including complete beginners who are encouraged to make reference samples. Returning students may be offered additional exercises alongside the set work. Participation includes practical activity, group discussion, show and tell, critique and tutor feedback.

Before you go

• Bring two packs of J cloths, a jam jar, a plastic box or strong plastic bag for damp sheets of paper, newspapers, and a notebook and pen.
• Optional materials for adding to paper include thread, wool, lace, petals and leaves.
• The studio is on the second floor and has lift access. Learners with mobility support needs should contact the college's Additional Learning Support or Art and Design administration before enrolling.
