Patchwork and Quilting for Beginners and Improvers

About this course

The course introduces traditional and fast piecing methods from English and American patchwork, alongside appliqué and quilting. Participants explore fabric preparation, colour and basic design while constructing a small quilt sampler or beginning an example project. Teaching combines theory with practical work in each class. Sessions cover both hand stitching and sewing-machine use, including techniques for assembling and binding a quilt top. Returning students can develop individual projects in consultation with the tutor.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and improvers, and learners may have some or no previous experience. New students work alongside ongoing students. Each class combines practical making with theory; simple calculations and reading instructions in English may help with the course.

• Suitable for learners developing patchwork, quilting or appliqué skills at different starting points.
• Returning students can use sessions to work on their own projects with tutor guidance.

Before you go

• Learners must bring a basic sewing kit, including cotton fabrics, needles, pins, scissors and matching or neutral thread.
• Bring approximately 1.5 to 2 metres of assorted fabric for a quilt top and 1.5 metres of backing fabric. Fabrics may be recycled or new.
• A notebook, pencil and eraser are requested; a folder for handouts may also be useful.
• Using specialist equipment and lifting or carrying sewing machines are part of the course.
• The classroom is on the second floor and has partial disabled access via a stair lift. Learners with mobility support needs should contact the provider before enrolling.
