Patchwork and Quilting for Beginners

About this course

Classes combine theory with practical work in hand and machine stitching, appliqué, quilting and embellishment. Learners explore traditional and experimental approaches while developing basic design principles and colour theory. The course introduces quilt construction through work towards a small sampler quilt. It also covers safe use of tools and equipment, sewing machine techniques, hand stitching and suitable finishing methods, with scope for developing individual project work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to learners with some or no previous experience, and is intended for beginners developing foundational patchwork, quilting and appliqué skills. Classes involve a combination of theory and practical making, including lifting and carrying sewing machines. Simple calculations and reading instructions in English may enhance learning.

Before you go

• Learners should bring a basic sewing kit including scissors, needles, threads, bobbins and a stitch ripper.
• Beginners should bring approximately 1.5 to 2 metres of assorted dress-weight or patchwork fabric for a quilt top, plus approximately 1.5 metres of backing fabric. Fabrics may be new or recycled.
• Learners should also bring needles, pins and matching or neutral-coloured thread. Wadding will be discussed in class.
• A notebook, pencil and eraser are needed. A folder for handouts may also be useful.
• The course involves lifting and carrying sewing machines. Partial disabled access is available via a stair lift; learners with mobility support needs should contact the provider before enrolling.
