About this course

Participants work from fashion drawings, photographs and other clothing images to develop their own pattern-cutting projects. The course covers interpreting designs, manipulating blocks, constructing and fitting toiles, and refining complex patterns. Teaching combines demonstrations, examples, samples, discussion, hand-outs and technical guidance with individual feedback alongside whole-class instruction. Health and safety inductions are included, with training required before using machinery or specialist equipment.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse fashion drawings and clothing images to identify pattern requirements
  • Manipulate blocks to translate designs into accurate patterns
  • Construct and fit toiles to a professional standard
  • Amend complex and advanced patterns

Is this course right for you?

This advanced course is intended for learners who have developed pattern-cutting skills through related intermediate study or equivalent competence. Participants work on individual projects within a whole-class setting, with demonstrations, discussion and individual feedback. Fluent English is required, while digital, mathematical and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential.

  • Previous study or equivalent competence in a related subject is expected
  • Class activities may involve standing at high tables for periods of time
  • Learners are expected to work considerately and collaboratively in a shared studio

Before you go

  • Participants must bring a basic sewing kit, pattern-drafting kit and note-taking materials.
  • Participants provide their own project materials, haberdashery and threads.
  • Some specialised materials, including calico for toiling, are available to purchase from the tutor.
  • Some pattern-cutting and garment-construction tools, along with paper and card, are provided for use in the studio.
  • A health and safety induction is provided before learners use machinery or specialist equipment.
  • The fashion studios are on the first floor, with lift access. Eating and drinking are not allowed in the studios, although bottled water is permitted.
