Pattern cutting for beginners: learn essential skills to alter pattern blocks

About this course

Participants learn to take measurements and draft a basic trouser block for a standard size 12, using simple calculations to shape and adapt the pattern. The course introduces pattern terminology and methods including dart manipulation, slash and spread, and pivoting. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, handouts, guided exercises and practical projects. Learners test and refine their block, work at half scale on different design adaptations, and explore how to develop a full-scale block into an individual style. Informal assessment takes place through practical work and ongoing tutor feedback.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and for learners returning to pattern cutting to refresh their skills. No previous pattern-cutting experience is required, but basic sewing machine knowledge is essential. Practical exercises, demonstrations and individual guidance take place within small group classes.

• Learners should be comfortable taking measurements and using simple calculations.
• Complete beginners who have not used a sewing machine are advised to take an introductory sewing-machine course first.

Before you go

• Learners must bring a calculator and coloured biro pens for measurements and marking work.
