Pattern Cutting Intermediate

About this course

Using standard-sized blocks, participants develop patterns for a set project and investigate features including pockets, vents, collars, cuffs, plackets, facings, pleats and yokes. They examine how two-dimensional patterns translate into three-dimensional garments, adjusting silhouette, seam placement and volume as they work. Teaching combines demonstrations, examples, samples, discussion, hand-outs and digital resources with individual guidance. Participants test ideas through drafting and toile work, using feedback to refine their designs. A tutor-directed skirt project takes place in the spring term.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners with intermediate pattern cutting experience, including those who have completed at least two beginner courses or have equivalent experience. Participants should be able to work with basic drafts, patterns, blocks and toiles, and should be prepared for both whole-class teaching and individual guidance.

• Requires existing familiarity with seam allowances, notches, grainlines and basic toile construction
• Suitable for learners able to use slash-and-spread and dart-pivoting techniques
• Class activities can involve standing at high tables
• Fluent English reading, writing and comprehension are required

Before you go

• Participants must bring sewing equipment including fabric and trimming scissors, a tape measure, pins, an unpicker, needles and thread.
• Participants must also bring pattern cutting equipment such as paper scissors, a tracing wheel, carbon paper, tape, pencils, coloured pens, a sharpener and rubber, plus folders and stationery.
• Paper, card and rulers or pattern masters are available in the classroom. Calico for toiles is available at cost price.
• A machine bobbin must be purchased from the tutor and is refundable at the end of the course.
• Health and safety training is provided before participants use machinery or specialist equipment.
• The fashion studios have lift access. Eating and drinking are not permitted in the studios, although bottled water is allowed.
