About this course

The course introduces the language and conventions of pattern cutting, including grainlines, seam allowances, darts, notches, blocks and slopers. Participants learn to read an industry pattern block, use accurate measuring and ruler techniques, and draft a standard block before adapting it to their own body measurements. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, verbal explanation and practical drafting exercises. Learners observe each technique, work independently and receive one-to-one guidance, with handouts, technical references, tutorial feedback and self-assessment supporting the process.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners beginning pattern cutting and does not assume previous knowledge. The Beginner level indicates an introduction to fundamental methods. Participants observe demonstrations before completing individual drafting work, with one-to-one guidance and feedback during the process.

  • No previous pattern-cutting knowledge is assumed.
  • The course involves accurate personal body measurement and drafting work at a table.

Before you go

  • Dot and cross paper is provided for drafting.
  • Recommended equipment includes an A3 arch lever folder with plastic pockets, notebook, pattern master ruler, tracing wheel, awl, notcher, tape measure, paper scissors, dressmaking pins, rubber, 0.7mm HB or B pencil, translucent adhesive tape with dispenser, coloured pencils or pens, and a calculator. A phone may be used as the calculator.
