Pattern Cutting Part 2: The Design Pattern

An improver-level course on adapting a fitted base block into an original garment design, with demonstrations, practical work and individual guidance.
About this course
Participants analyse their own design and modify a fitted base pattern block to create new lines, shaping and proportions. They then produce a labelled working pattern, cut it in calico and construct a design toile for fitting on the body. Feedback from fitting and tutorial discussion is used to correct the toile and refine the pattern. Teaching combines demonstrations, verbal explanation, practical work and one-to-one guidance. Peer discussion, tutorial feedback and self-assessment are also part of the learning process.
What you'll learn
- Analyse how a garment design differs from a fitted base block
- Manipulate a base pattern to create revised design lines, shaping and proportions
- Produce a complete, labelled working pattern from an adapted block
- Construct and fit a calico toile for an original design
- Refine a pattern by assessing fit and making corrections

- Participants need to bring a design idea, such as a sketch, image or existing garment
- The course combines individual project work with peer discussion and tutor feedback
