About this course

Participants study clothing samples and explore how basic geometric shapes relate to the body before drafting simple patterns to their size. The course introduces pattern cutting terminology, tools and straightforward methods for skirts, trousers and tops. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations with individual guidance, discussion, examples, samples and hand-outs. Feedback is provided during the course, with health and safety inductions included before learners use machinery or specialist equipment.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, including learners with limited or no previous experience. Sessions combine group teaching with individual guidance, so participants are expected to engage in practical studio work and follow demonstrations. Fluent English is required; digital, mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential.

Before you go

  • Participants should bring a basic pattern drafting kit, including pattern curves, pencils, a sharpener, rubber, paper scissors and masking tape.
  • A notepad, writing materials, calculator and A4 ring binder are also requested for notes and hand-outs.
  • Some pattern cutting and garment construction tools are provided in the studio; pattern paper and card are available for use.
  • Calico and other materials can be purchased from the tutor.
  • A health and safety induction must be completed before using machinery or specialist equipment.
  • The fashion studios have lift access to the first floor. Bottled water is permitted, but eating and drinking are not allowed in the studios.
  • Microsoft Teams and a college email address are used for some course communication and activities.
