Pewter Casting Sculpture: Lost Wax Technique

About this course

Participants develop an individual sculpture idea using soft and hard waxes, with the option of making a finished wax piece or preparing work for casting. The course covers plaster waste moulds, pewter casting and subsequent cold-working processes, including welding, planishing, polishing and patination. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations and handouts with group discussion and one-to-one feedback. Safe handling of hot materials and workshop practice are integrated into the practical work, alongside guidance on setting up a pewter casting foundry.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as learners who have some sculpture-making experience. Participants develop their own project with tutor guidance through demonstrations, group discussions and individual feedback. Some small lifting and manual dexterity are involved.

Before you go

• Bring ideas, a sketchbook or small models, and reference materials for a proposed project.
• Protective clothing, an overall or apron, and covered shoes or boots are required.
• Basic materials are included within an allowance; materials used beyond that allowance are charged.
• The course involves handling hot materials, some small lifting and manual dexterity.
