About this course

The course introduces Marxist and postmodern approaches to questions about society, history, culture and knowledge. It considers how economic systems, ideology and class shape institutions and relationships, alongside postmodern challenges to fixed identities, universal values, objectivity and grand narratives. Teaching focuses on clear explanations of complex ideas, examination of thinkers including Marx, Engels, Althusser, Foucault, Lyotard and Derrida, and reflective discussion. Learners will relate these traditions to contemporary political and cultural issues such as inequality, media, power and resistance.
