Philosophy

Beginner

A beginner-level guided reading group examining Foucault’s History of Sexuality through presentations, seminar discussion and core texts.

About this course

The course reads the first volume of Foucault’s History of Sexuality in full, alongside extracts from the remaining volumes. Discussion focuses on his genealogical method, ideas of sexuality and bio-power, his turn towards classical antiquity, and ethical questions raised by his approach to history. Tutor presentations and seminar discussion provide context for the reading, including Foucault’s relationship to Nietzsche, French historiography and the history and philosophy of science. The course also considers criticisms, reception and the relationship between Foucault’s work on sexuality, madness and punishment.
