About this course
Participants work in small groups with studio lighting to create portraits and still life photographs. Demonstrations, short presentations, handouts and image reviews introduce exposure, backgrounds, light shapers, reflectors, contrast control and the qualities of soft and hard light. The course also examines colour control, tethered capture and combinations of studio flash with daylight. Practical exercises are supported by group and individual feedback, with image analysis used to identify lighting choices and develop approaches to portrait and still life work.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for improvers who are new to photographic studio lighting, rather than beginners to photography. Participants are expected to understand their camera’s manual settings and to take part in demonstrations, small-group exercises, discussions and image reviews.
- Participants should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, handouts and health and safety information
- Teaching includes collaborative practical work as well as individual and group feedback
Before you go
- Participants may bring their own camera, if they have one.
- Cameras, tripods and lenses, including digital SLR and mirrorless models, are available to use during class hours.
- Objects for still life photography and personal paper or cloth backgrounds may be brought if desired.
- A notebook and pen may be useful.
- A memory stick or portable hard drive may be brought for digital files. PC-formatted hard drives can be read by the Apple Mac computers used by the photography department, but not written to.
- Google Classroom is used to share comments, download course material and upload images for group discussion.
